My green babies

You all know how exciting my life is, and I know you come here to read all the fabulous things, so today I decided to share some of my favorite plants with you, aren't you glad you stopped by. I call em my Green Babies, since i don't have any other babies right now, except of course Flora a.k.a. Florenzo. ( If you're a new reader, DH and I have become gardeners, just around our house-never thought it would happen, but WE LOVE IT! )

Cairo has hot, sometimes humid summers and not too cold winters, its awesome weather actually. Things grow like mad here in the summer months and everything is green and beautiful.

Soooo... my first and very favorite is my Indian Jasmine tree. This is the large one, it is blooming now as you can see and the scent is so exotic.

These ones below are a small cluster of four baby ones we planted in a different area- not yet blooming though.

My next favorite and one I am most proud of is our grapevine. I have posted pics before here, but look at it now...

Its really growing good and there are about 5 clusters of grapes that should be ready in a month or two. Its the first year for it, so next year will be even more.

What you can't see is how we have it "crawling" to the top of a terrace we have ... the idea is to cover the terrace top with the grapevine. Create an umbrella if you will.

Bogainvillas, what can I say...we LOVE em!!! Check out my two favorites, we have seven total, but these two are my favorite!!!

  7. I think I have something like your Indian jasmine tree. I bought a root in Hawaii 2 years ago, but its called plumeria. I have it in a pot so it can be brought in during the cold season. Maybe one day mine will be as beautiful as yours.

check it out. I pulled it off of Wilipedia.

The genus, originally spelled Plumiera, is named in honor of the seventeenth-century French botanist Charles Plumier, who traveled to the New World documenting many plant and animal species. The common name "Frangipani" comes from an Italian noble family, a sixteenth-century marquess of which invented a plumeria-scented perfume.

In Mexico, the Nahuatl (Aztec language) name for this plant is "cacalloxochitl" which means "crow flower." It was used for many medicinal purposes such as salves and ointments.

Depending on location, many other common names exist: "Kembang Kamboja" in Indonesia, "Temple Tree" or "Champa" in India, "Kalachuchi" in the Philippines, "Araliya" or "Pansal Mal" in Sri Lanka, "Champa" in Laos, "Lantom" or "Leelaawadee" in Thai. Many English speakers also simply use the generic name "plumeria".
